Who We Are
Up-Cycled U CIC is a community-driven initiative dedicated to taking in donated bikes, refurbishing them to be safe and fit for purpose, and then donating them to local refugees and low-income individuals in Cannock & South Staffordshire.
Our goal is to extend the transport reach of people in need, helping them access opportunities and build independence.
Our Mission
To empower individuals through the gift of refurbished bicycles, offering a hand-up rather than a hand-out.
By enabling better fitness, mental well-being, and access to new opportunities, we help people take control of their future.
As a green initiative, we save bikes from landfill, creating a positive impact on both people and the planet, while fostering supportive communities united by their shared love for cycling.
Our Vision
Our vision is a world where everyone has access to the freedom, opportunity and the well-being that bicycles provide; where communities thrive through mutual support and sustainability; and where the planet benefits from a circular economy that turns waste into empowerment.

Our Impact
Social Benefits
Our work helps refugees and low-income individuals overcome
transport barriers, improving their ability to access essential services, find
employment, and engage in social activities. By providing bikes, we empower people
to break out of isolation and integrate more fully into the community.
Environmental Benefits
By refurbishing and recycling bikes, we reduce waste and
promote sustainable transport options. We encourage cycling as a healthy, low-cost,
and eco-friendly way to move around the local area.

Our Journey
Up-Cycled U CIC is run by Russ Taylor, who formerly operated a local bicycle recycling charity. However, that organisation required huge resources in space (7,500 st ft building) to store hundreds of bikes, along with lots of staff & volunteers to operate. Unfortunately, that organisation folded in the aftermath of Covid-19, leaving a hole in local provision.
There is still a clear need among refugees and others on low-incomes, whose travel constraints as to how far and fast they can walk, or realistically afford in £3/journey bus fares. These limitations restrict options to escape the poverty trap created by unaffordable travel.
So, if all that is available is a garage, some tools and one willing volunteer, what can be achieved? If we can measure the person needing a bike, we can easily determine what size of bike they need. If was publicly as for that specific size and type of bike, the donor can immediately donate it at our workshop for immediate assessment. As soon as the bike is refurbished, the beneficiary can immediately come and get it. When they arrive to collect it, we can provide basic training before they ride it away. Using this approach, we can refurbish bikes to order, without needing to store them, so the costs involved to achieve our goals is minimal!
So Up-Cycled is more than a service, it’s a community effort. Someone needs a hand-up in life (or should that be a bike-up?). Every bike repaired, every gear tightened, and every mile ridden is made possible through the generosity and dedication of local volunteers, donors, and partners. It’s this spirit of giving that keeps us rolling forward, helping people build independence, one bike at a time.
